CIMA Research Foundation set up a social responsibility project in 2016, co-funded by the Agostino De Mari Foundation of Savona, with the aim of engaging local primary-school children on the biodiversity and wealth of our seas and on the ‒ ever increasing ‒ issues related to pollution from plastic in the sea.
Making children aware is the best tool for increasing awareness among the whole community. With the involvement of over 1,000 children, the project ‘A Sea of Plastic’ included interactive classroom sessions focusing on the large animals inhabiting the Ligurian Sea and on the problems they have to face, particularly those connected with plastic.
After the classroom activities, workshops were held: plastic items that the children themselves retrieved from beaches were used to create installations. These included, in 2017, a life-sized whale that became part of a touring exhibition for the whole community.
